What WHOIS privacy does
- Hides the registrant's name, email, phone number and address from public WHOIS lookups for that domain.
- Shows privacy-service placeholder details in their place.
- Cuts down on spam, unsolicited sales calls and scraping of your contact details.
- Your real contact details stay on file, so the registry can still reach you and the domain stays yours.
How to add it
- New registrations and transfers Add the domain to your cart. If the extension supports privacy, the WHOIS Privacy option shows for that domain with its yearly price. Switch it on before checkout.
- Renewals When you renew a domain from its Overview tab, you can keep privacy on for the new term.
- Domains you already manage Open the domain's Contacts tab and add WHOIS privacy there. It's added to your cart and turned on once checkout completes.
Renewal and cancellation
- Privacy renews every year together with the domain, on the same renewal invoice.
- You can turn privacy off from the domain's Contacts tab. Where privacy was paid for a full term, it stays on until that term ends and then doesn't renew.
- Privacy can't be turned off while the domain uses the Trustee Service or Local Presence, or while it's listed for sale on the Marketplace.
Good to know
- Availability depends on the extension. Some registries don't allow WHOIS privacy; if checkout doesn't show the option for a domain, it isn't available there.
- Domains using the Trustee Service or Local Presence always include WHOIS privacy, so the trustee's or local contact's details stay out of public WHOIS too. Checkout turns it on automatically when you choose either one.
